Day
of upsets as
5
of top 6 beaten
THERE are no undefeated clubs left in the ECB
Premier League after a day of surprises when the top four - Oxton, Hyde, Neston and Widnes - all had their colours lowered.
Oxton’s 100 per
cent run was ended by newly-promoted Marple at Townfield Lane by the decisive
margin of 118 runs. Andy McGuinness,
Marple’s talented Melbourne batsman, contributed a remarkable 139 and Gary Cash
40 to a tally of 246 against the usually tight Oxton attack, Andy Birley 4-49
and Ross Dixon 4-88. Oxton were then bundled out for 128, Andy Gibson 35 and
the returning Mark Debrabender 30 as spin twins Andy Greasley, 5-70 and Jo
Cash, 3-28 weaved their spells.
Neston, the
only other undefeated team, lost by five wickets at Alderley Edge where their
batsmen mustered a below par 145, Andy Murphy 55. The Parkgate men had no answer to the zippy
seam of Jason Whittaker who bowled unchanged to claim figures of 22-10-33-7,
while spinner Mark Warnes chipped in with 3-38.
Alan Day and Adam Worrall, who had carried their side to victory at
Chester the previous week, did it again to clinch a five wickets win with
knocks of 50 and 46 respectively.
That Didsbury were able to upset Hyde at Wilmslow road
was largely down to a cracking 100 by Phil Critchley in his side’s tally of
199-9, Tom Young 5-72. Hyde fell 20 runs
short at 179, James Duffy and John Ashley joint top-scoring with 34 while
skipper Nick Anderson, with 4-37 and spinner Jonny Fawcett, 3-39 bowled well to
earn their side a notable victory.
Late arrival Swapnil makes his mark
Fourth-placed
Widnes were well beaten in a one sided game at Urmston which saw the arrival of
the home side’s Indian all-rounder Swapnil Salvi from Mumbai. Salvi whose flight had landed at Heathrow at
7 a.m. that morning, followed by a dash up the M1 and M6, immediately showed
his quality with a rapid innings of 95 off 61 balls including six sixes, the
first 50 coming off 39 balls. “It was
the best debut I have ever seen from an Overseas player”, said thrilled home
chairman Rob Arnold.
Urmston
totalled 244, Michael Nalesnyik claiming 4-92 after which the Widnes batting
collapsed to 84 all out against the left arm pace of Adam Syddall, who had
figures of 6-38 off 14 lethal overs.
Champions
Nantwich recovered after losing a RedInsure T20 at Grappenhall the previous
evening when they trounced Chester Boughton Hall at Whitehouse lane. Opener
Jonny Kettle, who played for Leicestershire against Lancashire in a 2nd
XI match in mid-week, top-scored with 84 against Ian Linwood, 5-56. Mark Robinson’s innings of 43 was the only
redeeming feature as CBH were bowled out for 128, Jimmy Warrington 5-40.
Bottom of the
table Toft remain the only team still to record a win, their fourth defeat in
five being at the hands of Macclesfield at Booths Park. Adam Carolan top-scored
with 46 in Toft’s insufficient 149, Craig Melrose 3-59. After whch Macc coasted
home at 150-1, Rick Hough contributing 73 and new Cheshire star Khalid Sawas
63, both not out.

Grappenhall
are League’s
only
100 per centers
GRAPPENHALL became the
League’s only 100 per centers after scoring their fifth successive victory in Division
One, but they were hardly favourites to do so after being dismissed for 95
at Heaton Mersey, James McCoy 26 not out, Hassan Rashid 6-28, Rashid Amin 3-30.
But that fighting spirit which had enabled
Grappers to win every previous league and cup match this season came to their
aid as they bowled their hosts out six runs short, at 89. Aussie all-rounder Jason Smith took 5-8 off
9.2 overs and the experienced former Lancashire and Derbyshire all-rounder
Steve Titchard 4-42 off 18. ‘Mersey lost
their last six wickets for nine runs.
Sale lost their faultless record in a losing
draw at Dane Road against Bredbury St. Mark’s, who totalled 161-7, Darren Carr
31. Sale held out at 135-9, Jamal Benzafar 46, S. Raja 4-28.
Bowdon improved their challenge with a six
wickets home win over old premiership rivals Oulton Park, who struggled to post
122-8 in 50 overs at South Downs Road, Pat Roberts contributing an unbeaten 51
while Simon Marshall claimed 5-45. Mike
Bryan-Jones was not out with 50 in Bowdon’s reply.
Sood 99no and 4-1 for Christleton
Christleton recorded their
first win in a remarkable game at Bollington dominated by their
recently-arrived Indian all-rounder Varon Sood.
He finished unbeaten on 99 as Christleton posted 234-7, the returning Mo
Ali taking 4-24. Bolly were then bowled
out for the season’s lowest score of 41 in 12.4 overs, club secretary Russ
Butcher claiming 6-20 and Sood 4-1 from 10 deliveries. Matt Dawson contributed
24 of the runs while seven other batsmen failed to register and the last four
wickets fell without a run being added
Cheadle Hulme recorded an impressive 58 runs
victory over Brooklands at Grove Park in which their Tasmanian all-rounder Tom
Briscoe proved the star turn. Briscoe contributed an unbeaten 59 to his side’s
tally of 208-7, Guyan Narayanan helping him with 53. The Hobart University man then took 4-37 to
dismiss Brooklands for 150, although he couldn’t get rid of the limpit John
Birchall who contributed a stirling unbeaten 90
Irby beat Bramhall by four wickets at Mill
Hill Road to deposit their visitors at
the foot of the table. Bramhall managed only 129, Jack Harris 35, Rob Houghton
4-43 and Irby clinched their first win at 130-6, Houghton 53 not out, Simon
Wilkinson 5-35.
First
win for Timperley
in
Division Two
TIMPERLEY registered their
first win of the season in Division Two by the impressive margin of 154
runs at Alvanley, whose skipper Andy Bennion was left cursing his decision to
put the visitors in to bat. New Zealand
all-rounder Matt Macquet top scored with 89 as Timperley posted an impressive
234-9, then Alvanley were bowled out for 80 by left-arm spinner Ian Grindley
with 7-21.
An even lower score was posted by Malpas, who
suffered their fifth successive defeat, at Cheadle. They managed just 73, Aussie paceman Matt
Grose taking 7-36 off 22 lethal overs. Cheadle went on to win by seven wickets,
Greg Dixon 34, Maneesha Nissanka 3-8.
Leaders Congleton held
Leaders Congleton had to be
content with a nine draw points at Tattenhall who put up stout resistance at
the Flacca. Kevin Waterhouse was again
the star of the show for Congleton, his unbeaten 76 plus 44 from Arran Browe
helping Congleton close on 170-6.
Tatters replied with a spirited 154-8, Andy Morris 41, Waterhouse taking
4-39 off 17 busy overs, plus two catches.
Middlewich managed only seven points from a
home draw with Poynton, their visitors posting 175, Nick Berzins 91 not
out. With an innings of 57, skipper
James Cornford helped Middlewich hold out at 150-9.
Consistent Warrington’s third win was by 51
runs at the expense of Upton at Walton Lea.
Simon Hewitt, 33, top-scored in Warrington’s 158-9, then Upton were
ousted for 107, Darren Warburton 47, Kyle Adams 4-40.
The Stockport derby match at Cale Green ended
in a draw, the home side winding up 11 - 6 points to the good. Stockport posted 198-7, Tom Facer 57, Ifti
Hussein 4-45 and Georgians replied with 142-8, Harry Bailey 69 not out, Facer
3-13.

Stuart
Anderson spots a Cheshire record
PANEL umpire Stuart Anderson writes to Newsletter with the following thoughts:
“Your comment about Oulton Park’s Rick Moore captaining the Leeds / Bradford UCCE team got me thinking.
Cheshire League chairman Peter Davies and I had an enjoyable day watching Lancashire’s game at Fenners before the league season started (over Easter weekend). Cambridge’s captain this season is Rob Woolley of Hyde and with Oxford being led by Widnes’ Ben Williams, three of the six University teams are currently being captained by players from the Cheshire County League. This must be a record since the current structure of University cricket was introduced. I doubt whether there will have been two Cheshire captains in the Varsity match at Lord’s ever before (there is one day fixture on June 16 followed by a 4-day game in The Parks from Saturday, June 24 and, can you believe it, a T20 match, also in The Parks, on May 25).
“Incidentally, the six major universities who have fixtures against the counties (Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, Loughborough, Cardiff and Leeds/Bradford have been taken under the MCC’s wing as they provide sponsorship. There were several MCC Spirit of Cricket boards round Fenners on our day there. Under this scheme there is now also a combined MCC Universities team that plays in the County 2nd XI championship during the second half of the season. This year they have a fixture against Lancashire 2nd at Blackpool from July 25 – 27.
There is a strange arrangement whereby some of the University v county fixtures are considered first class and some not. It seems that the ‘pre-season’ games when the counties field full teams are, but later games are not. I fear, therefore, that Rick Moore’s team’s victory against Sussex will not count as first class on his cv.”

The Cricket Paper
FEATURE of the first issue of The Cricket Paper on Wednesday, May 16 was full coverage of all 26 ECB Premier Leagues. The highlighted the scores of the CCL’s six Premiership games together with brief reports.
On an adjoining page there was coverage of the East Anglian League in which Saffron Walden beat Cambridge Granta by 90 runs. Former Nantwich record-breaking batsman Glen Batticciotto scored 127 and took 4-43 for Saffron Walden while Rob Woolley hit 75 for the losers. Woolley will be back playing for Hyde shortly..
Also covered is Test, County, Minor Counties and Women’s cricket and there was an interesting piece about Worcestershire players in which the virtues of all-rounder Gareth Andrew were extolled. He was described as one of the MVP (Most Valued Players) in the county circuit. Now fully fit, Andrew is back playing first team cricket at Worcester and his appearances for Oxton may become limited.
